Cally Trench: For Red Umbrella (2016), a private commission, I took on the role of an old-style explorer and cartographer. I mapped a house and its surroundings, by pacing and using a compass, noting what I could (and couldn't) see at ground level, with no reference to aerial photography or existing maps. The areas that I could not see at ground level are painted in a pale blue colour often used in maps to depict water. The drawing, which is 70 x 70 cm, follows the common map conventions of showing the area from above using orthogonal projection. |
