Cally Trench's drawings
Cally Trench's self-portraits in ink, charcoal and pastel are made from life, at speed, and are presented as triptychs, referencing the three mirrors found on her grandmother's dressing-table in which Cally first examined her own face as a child, as well as triptych altarpieces and portraits in art history. In these Triptychs, she gazes out at the viewer as if she has nothing to hide, with the intent and honest look we give ourselves in the mirror when there is no one else in the room, a look almost impossible to duplicate in the presence of other people. Six of the Triptychs were shown in Siblings Cannot Agree, an exhibition of self-portraits and portraits by Cally Trench and Nick Trench at the Heseltine Gallery, Middleton Cheney, in September 2018. |

Cally Trench uses a multiplicity of images - such as diptychs, triptychs, collections of work, and time-lapse films - to approximate to the way that we actually see a person in continuous movement. Triptychs (2018) is a short silent film by Cally Trench made up of drawings in charcoal, ink and pastel of her face in a mirror, creating a changing series of triptychs (49 seconds). It was first shown in Siblings Cannot Agree in September 2018. |
Screaming Goddess (2018) is a short silent animation film by Cally Trench, with a single drawing from the Triptych series of drawings as its starting point (32 seconds). Screaming Goddess was first shown, installed in a velvet-lined pink kitchen bin, in Enshrine (curated by Rekha Sameer) at the Crypt Gallery, St Pancras Church, Euston Road, London, 21-22 July 2018. It was also shown in Siblings Cannot Agree in September 2018. |
