Susan Burton lives and works in Hambledon, near Henley-on-Thames. Born in 1965 in Adelaide on Australia's south coast, Susan represented her country in windsurfing before taking up careers as a chartered accountant with Coopers & Lybrand, a management consultant with PWC (working in the UK, the Middle East, East Africa and Latin America), and a finance director for a London-based dotcom start-up. However, it is as an artist that Susan has found her true vocation, and she graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College in 2007.

In her work, Susan explores the boundary between private and public environments through mixed media, including painting, photography and video. Her recent focus has been on privacy: what we share about our family, how we use our domestic space, how we behave in public, and how we perceive our 'real' selves.

Susan is especially interested in how new means of communication, image capture and image retrieval make privacy in each of these areas increasingly difficult to maintain. Much of Susan's recent work is set in a domestic context and possesses an unsettling psychological quality and sense of ambiguity.

Susan's key influences include the painters Edward Hopper and Marlene Dumas, the photographers Sally Mann and Wolfgang Tillmans, and the video artists Gillian Wearing and Mariko Mori.
