'In Conversation' at South Hill Park, 17th October 2020
A discussion led by Loucia Manopoulou and Cally Trench about how contemporary art experience is changing in the Covid-19 era, where online platforms are delivering artists' responses with unprecedented speed. The audience joined in the conversation from the beginning. The context for this discussion was that the two photographic projects in Making Connections started as an online project, where the photographs existed only in digital form and new photographs were added each week. They were then presented as physical objects in this exhibition in galleries at South Hill Park. This website now attempts to complement that physical exhibition by providing documentation. The discussion covered how it is different to be the viewer of a work of art online from being a viewer in a gallery space; the relationship between the body and a work of art; the impact of transmitted versus reflected light; the importance of documentation (photography and film) in giving a sense of the work, providing access to art, and educating and informing; and possible ways of creating a parallel experience online to the experience in the gallery. The discussion also covered issues about inclusivity and diversity, and the opportunities that digital technology offers. Thank you to all who participated in the event. |
