Lost Garden 1, 2 and 3 The plants in the three Lost Garden drawings are based on prehistoric extinct trees, especially the trees found fossilised in coal. These plants are placed in a 1950s/60s suburban landscape of wrought iron garden gates, fence panels, crazy paving, a shed, a pergola, a greenhouse and a cold frame, modelled on a popular toy of the era: Britain's Floral Gardens. These were plastic miniature gardens, on a scale of 1:32, sold in small packages that children could buy with their pocket money, and which included flower beds and flowers, garden buildings and furniture, lawn and crazy paving. Both the unfamiliar prehistoric trees and the familiar style of garden design from my childhood seem equally lost; we are reminded of the fragility of everyday life. These drawings were exhibited at the Spencer House Gallery in Tetbury in 2024 in Everything in the Garden. |

Aunt A's Garden I and II The two drawings (2023) below show an overhead view of the garden of an aunt's house, where I lived when I was eight or nine. These drawings are 50 x 50 cm, in pen and ink on watercolour paper, and are drawn so that they can sit side by side. These drawings were exhibited at the Spencer House Gallery in Tetbury in 2023. |
Front Garden, Back Garden and Vegetable Garden The three drawings (2022) below show the front and back gardens of the house where I lived as a small child, as I recollect it on a typical Sunday afternoon in summer.
